I didn't know what I was doing was actually a thing but I learned it's function well through this video. It's so helpful that I subscribed right away <3
Very helpful video. I feel like underpainting is basically never discussed and it makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing this.
THANK YOU SO MUUUUUCH, I'm currently an art student and I learned a lot about color theory with your vids than my major subjects 😐 Really helpful!!
Does it matter that the underpainting is blotchy?
this video is really helpful! thank you for making it!
Thank you!! Definitely i will try thiss
This was so informative . Thanks
So very helpful, I’m glad you showed up in my feed! New sub!
This was amazingly helpful, thank you so much. I definitely want to try these exercises in my own sletchbook.
Very nice demo….I find a blue ground like a soft ice blue can work well for snow landscapes ;). Quin Gold is my favorite most of the time 🙂
this is so helpful! thank you!))
This was so helpful!
this is so helpful! thank you so much!!
First time watching a video of yours and I have to say I'm glad I did. Very informative and still fun video. Useful tips were given and I found it to work inspirational for a beginner like myself. I recently bought a set of gouache but so far lack the courage to put brush to paper. But these tips are putting me on the right path. Thank you for that!
great video!!💕💕
This is by far the most helpful video on underpainting I've seen, really great to see how the exact same picture and colors can look with different underpainting colors, which is something I've always wondered about. Thanks!
hi, thanks for the great tutorial! i was watching the video and then a question came to my mind. in the beggining of the video you said that it is very important to let the underpaint dry completely to avoid water reactivaction since you are using gouache. let's say i am painting with gouache, is there any problem using a acrylic underpaint since acrylics do not reactivate?
So interesting thank youuu !
I never used underpainting because I never understood what it was for, but you did a great job of explaining it! I think I'll give it a try
that deer painting at the start blew my mind
Thanks for the informative video! I've used underpaintings with acrylics but wasn't sure how it would work with gouache since it's water-based.
As a colour blind person i used to think i shouldn't use under paintings but i eventuality relised even though i couldn't see if my colour was a warm red or a cool yellow i still use under paintings . So yeah under paintings = good
thank you! this was super helpful! <3
Very interesting and well structured video! I highly recommend having a look at James Gurney's videos (and books), he also works with underpainting in his landscapes, setting the mood and atmospheric feel to it. Also, I think a series of thumbnail sketches could be helpful to try out what colour to choose for undeperpainting before diving into the final work… I might try sometime! Thank you for sharing this video, Mary!
I thought it interesting.
I thought an under painting had all the values laid out?
Your work is beautiful and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. This was so informative and inspiring !
Thank you so much! Foundation is important.
This is such a helpful video. Such beautiful paintings too 🙂
Love this ! So informative and helpful 🌸
Whic sketchbook do u use
Do you actively try to keep your paints a little less than opaque so the underpainting shows through? I typically like my paint very opaque and I assume it will completely hide the underpainting.
thankyou Mary! i enjoyed watching this video, been wondering if i can use an underpainting in gouache and yes, you answered a looot of my questions :)) p.s. your voice is very nice to hear!
Great tutorial!
What if you’re using brown Kraft paper? That’s the type of paper I use and I use gouache?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
That was so informative! Thank you!
Learned something new! I’ve never heard of underpainting before and look forward to trying this with my paintings!
Really helpful, never heard of this technique until now! Thank you 😊
i love the overall mood the blue underpainting brings to the subject. would be really great for calming or solemn pieces.
